Dual Flush Toilets
Water- A precious resource
Water is becoming a scarcer and more expensive resource. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) predicts that by 2013 36 states will experience water shortages as a result of increase water usage and inefficient water management. In Central Florida, the aquifer is under increased stress and every municipality from Kissimmee to Lake Mary water management districts are struggling to rework plans to accommodate water use.
The federal government mandated a standard of 1.6 gallons of water per flush which is less than ½ of the 1980’s standards. The dual flush toilet typically uses much less than even that standard.
How a Dual Flush Toilet works
Dual flush toilets are a new alternative to traditional toilets and typically uses 2/3 less water that a standard toilette. It has a separate flush for solid and liquid waste using a little more than ¾ gallons of water for liquid waste and a little more than double that for solid waste. A standard toilet uses between 3 and 5 gallons of water for every flush.
The dual flush toilet depends on the power of the water to flush waste away as opposed to the old combination of water and air used by traditional toilets. To maximize pressure the trapway or hole at the bottom of the toilet is larger than traditional toilets.
What to expect from your dual trap toilet
Dual trap toilets use up to 68% less than a standard toilet. That can save 18,000 gallons of water a year. That’s enough to fill up a swimming pool! That can save a home $50-$100 per year on water and wastewater bills. They can reduce septic system loads by up to 72% meaning substantially larger time in between tank cleanings.
They are more efficient than low-flush toilets and eliminate the need for the “double flush”. They have the appearance of a traditional toilet and come in the same varieties. They are certified by the EPA’s Water Sense Program.
